Sept 22, 2020 – Oceanography Unit Study

My 8th grade daughter has always loved marine life, the beach, dolphins, aquariums, and anything else to do with the ocean. This year for science, she wanted to study oceanography.

We have a mom at our co-op who offered to do a marine science class. We decided to build from there and do a unit study on oceanography.

I’d like to share our resources in case you have a similar student.

The “Ocean Anatomy” book is a lot of fun, with good information

Here are some sample pages:

I found a free, online course from Georgia Virtual school. It contains pages of information to read that can be printed out, videos that coordinate with the material, and interactive worksheets.

Here is the link to that website:

Here are two good introduction videos from YouTube that go along with the first unit

We will plan field trips as we can. Our short list includes the New Orleans Aquarium and the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies in Gulfport, MS.

We aren’t far from the Infinity Science Center in Pearlington, MS where we visited not long ago. We studied weather and hurricanes last year, and they have a great educational exhibit there. The study of ocean currents and weather events is included in oceanography.

I will continue to update you as we find more resources and continue to study oceanography.

Happy homeschooling!
