August 6, 2020 – I don’t have a Teaching Degree

One of the things that can be scary for moms making the leap from public or private school to homeschool is the fear that they aren’t qualified to teach.

Let’s think about that for a minute.

What do you need for an education degree? Well, you need two years of general education college classes. So if you’ve had any college, you have that.

You need classes on classroom management. Is that necessary for homeschooling? Not at all.

You need classes on curriculum development and writing lesson plans. Is that necessary for homeschooling? Another no. There are so many amazing curricula already laid out for you.

You need classes on understanding children. Is that necessary for homeschooling? Again, no. You already understand your children. You know how they think, what motivates them, and what discourages them.

Now – Am I saying an education degree isn’t worthwhile? Not by any means. Classroom teachers are amazing beings who manage diverse groups of kiddos and teach them well.

But that’s not what is required of you as a homeschooling momma.

You only need to want what’s best for your child. There are so many resources, groups, curriculums, online classes, and available learning opportunities, that you only need to be their learning coach.

And YES – you CAN do that.

Happy Homeschooling!!
